The new EAW high resolution Douglas A-20K - non-flyable bomber version for the B26 slot.

Helen was an A-20K from the 645th Bomb Squadron, 410th Bomb Group, 9th Air Force USAAF in 1945. The 410th BG flew medium altitude bombing missions first from England and later from captured airfields in France after the invasion. Most missions after the invasion were tactical to support Allied armies advancing into occupied France. By 1945, German ground movement was done at night to elude the rover fighter bombers that blanketed what was left of the western part of the Third Reich. The 410th switched a number of their aircraft to night interdiction missions flown singly instead of by formations of bombers. The planes carried flares, which they would drop over highways, and then proceed to bomb any traffic they found. A number of these planes were painted overall black in the field for these missions - Helen was one of these.

The A-20J was the next to the last design update for the A-20 series, becoming available for combat deployment at the last of the year 1943. They were often used as lead ships in Europe and the Mediterranean theaters at the head of gun nosed A-20G models because they could carry a bombardier, whereas the A-20G's could not. The A-20G's would drop their bombs when the lead ship dropped theirs. The very last version was the A-20K, which was identical except for slightly more powerful engines. Both of these series were glass nosed bomber versions only. No solid gun noses were used on these models.
